Motif is a family-owned leather accessories brand with roots in Ukraine. Our family brought with us a long appreciation for leather goods that are practical, expressive, and made to last. In 2023, we moved to the United States and settled in Washington State, where Motif continues to grow while remaining closely connected to the craftsmanship and character that shaped the brand from the beginning.

We work exclusively with premium full-grain leather, using two distinct materials depending on the product. Our handbags, purses, backpacks, and belts are made from cowhide leather approximately 4 mm thick, selected for its substantial feel, durability, and structure. Tote bags and wallets are crafted from approximately 2 mm goatskin, a thinner but naturally dense leather that combines strength with a lighter, more flexible character. Both materials are chosen to age naturally, developing more personality as they are carried and used.

Texture is one of the defining elements of Motif. Many of our leathers undergo an embossing process that increases density, strength, and stiffness while creating the distinctive patterns seen throughout our collection. Achieving the right result depends on a careful balance of three primary factors: pressure, temperature, and airflow. These parameters are adjusted according to the type of leather and its color, allowing each embossed surface to retain the character of the hide while gaining greater definition and structure.

Color is equally important to the way we design. Motif currently works with a palette of 21 colors, giving each design the opportunity to feel classic, understated, playful, or unexpected. Handbags, purses, backpacks, and tote bags can be produced in either a solid color or a two-tone combination, while belts and wallets are offered in solid colors. This flexibility allows familiar shapes to take on very different personalities while preserving the same construction and material quality underneath.

We do not believe that a piece should become unavailable simply because a particular combination is not sitting on a shelf. When a style or color is not currently in stock, we always offer it as Made to Order rather than marking it as sold out. Once ordered, the piece is normally made within one to two weeks. It is a slower approach than mass inventory, but one that allows us to offer a broader selection of colors and combinations while making each piece with a clear destination in mind.

For us, leather is at its best when it becomes part of everyday life. Full-grain leather changes with touch, movement, sunlight, and time; the surface softens, the color develops, and the marks of use become part of its story. Motif pieces are designed to be carried rather than preserved behind glass—to move between work, travel, weekends, and ordinary routines, and to become more personal the longer they are owned.
